Starting Your Podcasting Journey: 10 Tips for Your First Episode

Back when I started podcasting in 2015 and I told people, I was typically met with, “What’s a podcast?”

Fast forward to today and I don’t get that as much.

In fact, I think the more common reaction when I tell folks I work as a podcast editor and consultant is, “Oh! I’ve had an idea for a podcast myself!”

And some have even purchased the equipment, bought the courses, or went to the conferences to learn, but somehow can’t get past that planning stage to press that big scary RECORD button.

Sometimes I’ll have someone book a call with me and they’ll tell me everything they’ve done so far, and then wait expectantly as if I have to give them the “go-ahead” to officially start.

Here’s a secret, future podcaster …

The Most Important Recordings You'll Ever Create

It’s funny the things you save to remember people you’ve lost. When my dad died earlier this year and I helped my stepmom clean out his stuff, I kept his prescription aviator sunglasses and a mostly used bottle of Aqua Velva — I knew I couldn’t toss those two things that distinctly make up my forever mental picture of my dad.

I have them displayed on a shelf by my desk as both a tribute and so I can reach over and unscrew that cologne cap whenever I want to remember what my dad would smell like when he was getting himself hyped up for social interactions.

If you remember Blab that shut down in 2016 (RIP Blab), you may remember this amazing live video platform where you could have a chat room, record podcasts, bring in guests easily, and you could join via mobile app. Unfortunately, Blab is no more.

But after years of its legacy hanging around, I was so happy to have been introduced to GetVokl and talk to Alex today from the company!

What to Bring to a Podcasting Conference

What to Bring to a Podcasting Conference

If you’ve ever been to summer camp, you remember the first day back the next summer and seeing all your friends again after almost a year. Well, as a podcast, you get to relive that feeling at podcasting conferences!

I’m really not a workaholic, but I consider the conferences mini-vacations for me, which probably means I’m in the right profession, since work isn’t supposed to be this fun, right?

But if you’ve never been before, you may find yourself worried about what to pack and bring with you for your first. Here are some of my favorite items to bring when I go to podcasting conferences.

FREEBIE: Tips for Interviewing Podcast Guests

While your comfortable (or getting comfortable) behind the microphone, your guests might not be. Although they may have amazing insights to share and your audience will love them, it's still nerve-wracking to be put on the spot.

While I can't do much to take away their nerves (aside from give you my recipe for Sangria, maybe), I can offer some tips to help them feel more at ease about sounding good.

While it might be easier to have your guest join you in your studio, it's not always possible. The tips in this post are for podcast interviews done remotely.
