Looking to work with someone on your podcast but not sure where to start? Maybe you’re just starting out and looking for someone to walk you through starting a podcast from idea to full launch. Or perhaps you’re seeking out someone to help you behind the scenes on your podcast or handle the tasks you’d rather outsource.
Let’s look at some of the jobs in podcasting and some of the questions to ask when you interview someone to help you work on your podcast.
What’s the difference between a coach, consultant, and service provider?
Before you look further for someone to help you with your podcast, you first need to identify the kind of help you’re seeking.
A podcast coach is someone who works with you to guide and teach you on an ongoing basis. Usually a podcast coach is hired to either help you set up and launch your podcast.
A podcast consultant (what I focus on, at the moment) is more of for one-off help fromtime to time. This could be for the DIYer who may need some help on strategy, focus, marketing, growth, or something specific to their show.
A podcast service provider is someone or a business that specializes in ongoing production assistance such as podcast editing, writing show notes, marketing, social media management, etc.
Podcast services available
Do you have that one thing about your podcast you hate doing? For many podcasters, it’s editing or writing show notes. In fact, I got my start working on others’ podcasts when I was in Facebook groups for podcasters and people were complaining about how much they hated how much time it took to write show notes. I said that I enjoyed it and, before I knew it, I had potential clients in my DMs asking my rates for writing show notes.
If you enjoy podcasting and all aspects of it, it can be a great side gig or even a full-time gig for those with the time, energy, and commitment. And for those who are podcasting and looking to outsource, here are just some of the types of podcast service providers you’ll find:
Podcast editors
Show notes writers
Social media marketers and VAs
Podcast producers/managers
Podcast website builders
There are even companies that make it as easy as recording your audio and letting them do the rest!

Questions to ask when interviewing someone to work on your podcast
It can be tough to hand over the reins of your podcast to someone else, even if you're only offloading one or two things. The better you know what to expect from your podcasting service provider, the better you'll be able to shift your focus to your content and the past of podcasting you truly enjoy.
Here are some questions you may want to find out before signing on to work with someone on your podcast:
What is your rate and what's included?
What does onboarding look like and how do we get started?
Is there a contract to sign? Is there a cutoff time to do so for the current rate?
What's your lead/turnaround time? What deadlines do I need to be aware of?
What's the best method to schedule time off/schedule changes?
What's the best way to reach you for corrections/updates?
What information and files do you need from me to get started?
It helps to come to the initial interview/clarity call with some things in mind, such as what specific tasks you're looking to outsource or questions you want answered
Most podcasting service providers carry knowledge in more than one area of expertise when it comes to podcasting. My editing clients email me frequently to ask about updates they've heard about in podcasting to get my take on them or to ask about new products and services and my experience with them. I'm always happy to answer their questions and would rather they ask me (who has to edit them on a weekly basis) rather than someone trying to make a quick buck by selling them something they don't really need.
