Pick My Brain: Recommendations for Remote Co-Hosting a Podcast

I recently got an email from someone looking to start a podcast with their friend, but they wondered if it was possible since they live in separate states.

This is a common question in podcasting and my recommendations are usually the same when I get these questions in my inbox, so I wanted to share my response here. If you’re a new podcaster looking to get started, be sure to save this link and share it with your cohosts.

My Remote Podcasting Recommendations:

For podcast hosting, I really like Libsyn (that's what I use) and also Captivate. Blubrry is also a good option, especially if you want to do a WordPress website since they integrate quite nicely with them.

For recording software, to get started Audacity is free and there's a lot of help and tutorials online that can help you get acquainted with it. I started on that, but now use Reaper, which is another inexpensive option ($60 one-time fee. They also have a very generous trial period)

Off-hand, I don't think you'd need a mixer for remote recording. As an editor, I would rather you spend the money getting good mics. My favorites can be found HERE - the Samson Q2U and Audio-Technica2100x are both great options under $100

For a remote recording like it sounds like you have, check out Riverside.FM and Squadcast.FM. If you're also looking to stream your show to YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, etc., check out Streamyard. A lot of podcasters start out with Zoom, which is fine if that's what you have and are comfortable with. The audio quality isn't as good as the recommendations above, though.

If you wanted to go the hardware route with remote recording, an interface like one in the Rodecaster Pro series would be good to look at — they also recently announced some upcoming new products, including a smaller unit that might work well for you!

I hope that helps get you started Please note that some of these links may be affiliate links, which means that if you make a purchase through them, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

Happy podcasting!

P.S. — If money is tight but you’re seriously eyeing a particular piece of gear for your podcast, check out the Used equipment tab from Guitar Center. LOTS of Rodecaster Pros, many of them are in Excellent or Great conditions!
