Imagine going on your podcast app, searching for a new podcast. Let’s say you want to find a Mindfulness podcast since this is what I’m currently taking a course on and it’s on my mind (well, obviously 😉).
You find one you think you might like, but you can’t be sure just from the title and cover art, alone. And maybe the description is even a little vague (which is more common than you’d think).
Most likely, you would go to the list of episodes so you can check out what kind of things they talk about. But what if all you saw was this:
Episode 45
Episode 44
Episode 43
Episode 42
Episode 41 … you get the idea.
So you click away from that podcast and click on the next one. This one may look similar, but the difference is how they title their episodes. This mindfulness podcast has titles like:
How Meditation Helped Oprah’s Company Thrive
Relieve Stress like Jennifer Aniston in 20 Minutes
Hugh Jackman Gives His Top 5 Tips for Relaxing
How Meditating Helped LeBron James Become a Better Basketball Player and Win the 2012 NBA Playoffs
Keanu Reeves Learned to Conquer His Fears by Meditating
Do you see how that’s way better than the first example?
They all definitely tell you what the episode is about, but let’s break it down even more into 5 tips. Most of these podcast episode titles can fall under 2-3 of these tips, as you’ll see.
1. Create Intrigue
Pique your listener’s interest by creating a title they can’t resist. Let’s look at the first episode title for this one.
How Meditation Helped Oprah’s Company Thrive
Oprah, you say? Thriving Company, you say? I can’t think of many people who would turn those things down. If you need help thinking of what might intrigue your listeners, go to the next tip.
2. Talk About Results
Most likely, you’re not creating a podcast just to hear yourself talk (and if you are, go ahead and name your podcast episodes whatever you like 😉). But if you want people to click to listen, be sure to let them know what’s in it for them. What value are you giving? What value is your guest bringing? What will they walk away from the podcast with? Let’s look at this episode example:
Relieve Stress like Jennifer Aniston in Only 20 Minutes
The results of listening to this podcast would be learning how to relieve stress (always a “yes, please”) and it only takes 20 minutes? Great!
And you’re saying I get to meditate like Rachel Green from “Friends”?! Um, yes please!
So when you’re titling your episode, think of what you'r listeners will walk away with the ability to do after and lead with that.
