A few years ago, I did a diet & weight loss podcast with a podcasting friend who was starting intermittent fasting at the same time I was. For about 2 years, we met weekly and went Live in our Facebook group to talk about our progress, then we’d release the audio as a podcast.
The show is called Hate to Weight — and for those following me now, it's less body-neutral than I am now. I rarely talk about intermittent fasting and intuitive eating, though I still do it for myself. At the time I was recording it, I was still dealing with a lot of internalized fatphobia, some unhealthy eating habits, and twisted mindsets about eating.
As much as there was an evolution on the show, I don't know if I'd publish it today under the same circumstances, to be honest.
Food and nutrition coaching, therapy, internal work, religious and purity culture deconstruction, and being around more body-neutral and body-affirming spaces have helped me step away from and examine the part of me that craved that attention for my struggle and journey.
In the end, though, Hate to Weight was a fun journey and big step for me and I'm grateful to have followed my impulsivity to start it.
The show still gets a few dozen downloads every week, which is one of my favorite things about creating a podcast and having people find it months and even years later. Sometimes listeners will reach out and ask about the show and what has happened to us since we stopped recording back in 2020.
A post showed up a few weeks ago in the private Facebook group we set up for the podcast asking for an update and if we were coming back.
For those who may be wondering the same thing, here's what I wrote back:
Hey there gang!
Thank you so much for expressing your love and support for Hate to Weight. I can probably speak for John when I say it means the world to us and we appreciate your curiosity about future episodes of the show ❤️
It's so heartwarming to see your eagerness for new episodes and it might be something we do in the future, like a catch-up show perhaps. Never say never!
Personal update for those curious:
Since our last episode, I've gained 30 pounds and I'm cool with that. I try for more body-neutrality, rather than body-negativity or body-positivity.
This was the first winter since first starting IF I wasn't freezing all the time. Between losing a friend from high school in 2022 and then losing my dad earlier this year, weight loss or even maintenance mode became a very back-burner priority and there have definitely been days when food became my go-to comfort.
I also know my weight has been affected because of bloating due to my uterine condition, Adenomyosis, I think I mentioned on some of the Facebook Lives we did back in 2020.
This is one of the reasons I've stopped letting the scale get to me — some of my weight is inflammation and symptoms of chronic illness, so I HAVE to learn to give myself grace as it's progressed.
I'm looking at a hysterectomy in the future and, not gonna lie, I've wondered how much weight that will alleviate just with that procedure because it feels like I have a bowling ball between my hips for weeks at a time now.
In lighter news, I'm also currently working on my 2nd book and gearing up for the release of that in 2024, and there might be a return of my other podcast, The Story Behind, coming soon! 👀
